LBC: How To Beat The Heat In Frills

"Ship's Log, Supplemental Entry:
Sometimes, it's too hot for extra hair and organza.

Seriously, it's Classical Puppets...

Today's topic is about how to beat the heat while still frilling it up!

I overheat very easily, so it is important for me to keep materials generally lightweight and loose fitting.  Aside from that, I like to skip out on several items, and replace them with others to help balance out the aesthetic.

Items I like to avoid in the heat:

- Multi-layered petticoats
- Pleather shoes (don't breathe)
- Boots/Booties (hot feet = miserable lolita)
- High-high heels (too much work in the heat!)
- Long sleeves
- Heavy blouses
- Wigs (even my short base ones, though those help tremendously!)
- Thick socks/tights

Things I opt for instead:

- Cage skirt or a stiff, 1-2 layer tulle petti (or settle for lolita a la mode, still cute!)
- Fabric or leather shoes
- Low heels or flats (just for comfort, which goes a long way in the heat)
- 3/4 sleeves (I don't do short sleeves ...)
- Sheer blouses
- No blouse with a sheer cardigan, bolero, or capelet
- Natural hair in an up-do (to keep it off of my neck) with a section styled in front to simulate bangs
- Sheer tights/socks

I've got a few other guidelines as well:

- Use a large purse (that can fit at least a folding fan and full sized water bottle so you are hydrated and not stressed out holding things with sweaty hands)
- Real, plastic, or fabric jewelry ONLY (without gloves or a blouse, the nickel in clasps, rings, and chains of costume jewelry will irritate my skin, especially when it's hot and my pores are open!)
- Carry oil blotting sheets! (Self explanatory, I am a witch, I melt.)

Using the same main piece, here's an example coord for 60° F and 90° F.

What I Swapped:
Wig with Hat -> Natural Up-do with Hairbow
Organza Petticoat -> Adjustable Cage Skirt
Metal Necklace -> Fabric Necklace
Heavy Blouse -> Chiffon Capelet
Black OTKs -> Black Sheer Tights
Black Pleather Boots -> Black Fabric Heels
Medium Clutch -> Large Shoulder Bag

I kept the bloomers because a cage skirt is basically a giant cone of shame, and I am not a gambling woman...

And this was the result:
Bonus puppy pic.  He's hot too (time to hang out in front of the AC with mom!)
And yes, I am one of those horrible sidecut people.

Closeup - the cinnamon roll updo is my fav sidecut style.
I am using a small hair bump under the bun, and bobby pins.

For a mostly black coord, it was pretty breezy!  I hope you liked it and that these tips are helpful to you.  I try to think of coordinating like playing Jenga - every time you break or bend a rule, it's actually fine so long as something else balances out that decision, and dressing for hot weather is no exception.

That's all for now!  Bear signing off!"

This frequency will remain open for response.

Cupcake Kamisama shared some tips, too!

  1. I really like the outfit you put together for this, especially your hair, I think it's chic and very heat appropriate. I haven't really thought about shoes as having an effect when wearing Lolita, probably because my own shoe choices are relatively limited. :P

  2. Thank you! Head, feet, and hands are where I vent the most heat, but it still took me forever to figure out that skipping gloves, wig, AND heavy shoes might be a good idea, haha.
